Trash & Recycling

2023 Large Item Pickups: January 7th, April 1st, June 24th, and October 7th.

The large item pickup is scheduled quarterly. Please place your items curbside no later than Friday. The haulers can accept anything that two people can carry including appliances such as: washers, driers, refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers.

The following will not be accepted: oil or gas, paint, tires or car batteries, no pesticides or chemicals, and no construction materials.

Regular Weekly Trash Collections are on Mondays and Thursdays

Holidays observed: New Year’s Day, MLK Jr.’s Birthday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. For holidays that fall on a Monday, yard waste collection will move to Tuesday. Trash and recyclables will move to Thursday collection.

The Town contracts out our trash and recycling collection. Items should be ready for pickup before 7:00 AM. Please place trash in plastic bags inside covered, securely "locked" receptacles, as we have a clever and sociable raccoon population here. Receptacles may be placed at the side or rear of your house; it is not necessary to put them at the curb. If you change the location of your cans, please advise the Town Office.

The hauler has requested residents contact them directly about missed collections: Key Sanitation and Recycling, 301-515-7947.

Curbside Recycling Collection takes place on Thursdays.

Holidays observed: New Year’s Day, MLK Jr.’s Birthday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. For holidays that fall on a Monday, trash will be collected on Thursday. If it falls on a Thursday, it will be collected on Friday.

Recycling bins are available to Town residents through the Town Office at 301-933-7488. Request a bin online.

The Town has been advised that Montgomery County is going to start rejecting recycling loads because of the number of plastic bags being used. Please do not include any plastic bags – including the ones marked as “recyclable” – in your recycling bin for collection. If the recycling load is rejected, the Town will be responsible for any fees charged for disposal of the material.

Yard Waste (Curbside): Mondays

Yard waste is collected every Monday throughout the year with holiday exceptions listed below.

Branches and large brush – bundle with twine, no larger than 30 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length

Branches –not to exceed 4 feet in length, 4 inches in diameter.

Composting

In May 2023, the Town of Garrett Park launched a one-year compost pilot program for Town residents. This program offers a subsidy for services through Compost Crew, LLC. Residents may signup at compostcrew.com. If you have questions about the program, please contact Assistant Town Manager Kayla Buker.

Leaf Removal:

From mid–October through the end of December, the Town’s contractor removes leaves from the Town streets. Weather permitting, the contractor collects leaves at least weekly. Residents are asked to rake leaves into long piles along the curb. Please keep the piles free of rocks, brush, or branches that could damage the vacuum machinery, and do not shred leaves.

All drivers please be aware of children playing in the leaves.

Household Hazardous Waste:

The Montgomery County Shady Grove Solid Waste Transfer Station accepts many types of hazardous wastes, (materials that are reactive, ignitable, combustible, toxic and/or corrosive), and many other types of materials.
