Historic Preservation Committee seeking two new members

The Town is seeking two new members for the Garrett Park Historic Preservation Committee. Reply with your interest to chris.keller@garrettparkmd.gov

The Historic Preservation Committee works to preserve and enhance the Town’s overall historic heritage. It acts as a clearinghouse for information on historic preservation and provides educational information through house tours, Bugle articles, publications, cooperative activities with the Garrett Park Archives, and periodic open meetings. It may develop and recommend guidelines to the Town Council to maintain the nineteenth century village plan while accommodating over a hundred years of change and growth. It also assists Montgomery County’s Historic Preservation Commission by submitting reports when residents within the Garrett Park Historic District plan external renovations to their homes.

The ideal committee member will:

1.    Have a special interest, knowledge, or training in the fields of historic preservation, architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design.
2.    Bring complementary skills in writing, communication, project management, and long-term planning.
3.    (especially helpful, but not required) Live within the County-designated Garrett Park Historic District, as that individual would have first-hand insight about some of the historic preservation issues the Committee deals with.

The term for committee members is typically three years, and the monthly time commitment is typically 4-6 hours. One current vacancy is to fill a term ending November 2024.  Please direct any questions to the Historic Preservation Committee chair: Nancy Walz (nancywalz@gmail.com).
